How to plan your visit

Visit the Pucará de Tilcara

The Pucará is an archaeological site associated with the Omaguaca culture. It is one of Tilcara’s principal visits. Check current opening times and entry arrangements, and treat the site with care.

Spend time in Tilcara itself

The Dr. Eduardo Casanova Archaeological Museum and José Antonio Terry House Museum are among the cultural choices identified by Argentina’s tourism portal. In the evening, a peña can introduce regional music. Check each venue’s program before visiting.

Consider Garganta del Diablo

The Devil’s Throat is a walking destination near Tilcara. Trail and access conditions may vary, so confirm the route, local requirements and weather before setting out. Carry suitable footwear, water and sun protection.

Explore neighboring Quebrada towns

Tilcara sits on the broader Quebrada route. Maimará is known for the Paleta del Pintor landscape; Purmamarca offers the Hill of Seven Colors, and Humahuaca is farther north. Choose a few stops and leave time to enjoy each one.

When is the best time to visit Tilcara?

Argentina’s official tourism portal describes April through November as the drier period for the Quebrada. Rain is more likely between December and March. Tilcara’s elevation means nights can be cool even when daytime sun is strong.

Pack layers, comfortable walking shoes and sun protection. Festivals such as Enero Tilcareño, Carnival and Holy Week can shape the experience; check official calendars and availability when planning around them.

Tilcara as a base in the Quebrada

Tilcara lies along Ruta Nacional 9 in Jujuy. It works well for an overnight base between Purmamarca and Humahuaca, with Maimará nearby. Salinas Grandes is generally approached from Purmamarca, so give that higher route its own day.
