Spend time with the Hill of Seven Colors, village life and the Paseo de los Colorados. This Quebrada de Humahuaca town is also a starting point for the high road to Salinas Grandes.
Plan your visit ↓Start with the essentials
A full day covers the village and a relaxed walk around the Colorados. Stay one or two nights if you want the quieter hours in town and a separate excursion to Salinas Grandes. Argentina’s official tourism portal suggests two to four days when Purmamarca is used to explore the wider area.

Explore this route →The Cerro de los Siete Colores is part of Purmamarca’s setting, close to the center. Its appearance changes with the light. Give yourself time to walk through the village rather than making only a roadside photo stop.
The trail loops behind the hill through reddish rock landscapes. Set out when the temperature is comfortable, carry water and sun protection, and walk at a pace that suits the altitude. Check the route and access locally before starting.
The square and artisan market are places to browse textiles and local crafts. The church of Santa Rosa de Lima and the traditional streets add a cultural dimension to the visit. Respect local residents, working spaces and community traditions.
From Purmamarca, Ruta Nacional 52 climbs the Cuesta de Lipán toward Salinas Grandes. The route reaches much higher elevation than the village. Check weather, road conditions, access arrangements and the scope of the excursion with a local operator.
The official Argentina tourism portal recommends April through November for the drier season. Rain is more likely from December through March; conditions can still change from day to day. Cool mornings and nights are possible even when the sun is strong.
Bring layers, comfortable shoes, water and sun protection. If Salinas Grandes is on your route, plan for the extra altitude and ask a qualified health professional about any personal concerns.
Purmamarca is in Jujuy’s Quebrada de Humahuaca. Tilcara and Humahuaca belong to the same broader route, while Salinas Grandes is reached westward across the mountains. An overnight stay helps separate the salt flats from a day exploring the Quebrada.
Allow for accommodation, meals, transport and any guide or excursion to the salt flats. Inclusions and access conditions vary by operator; check the current details before booking.
