Purmamarca
Walk by the Hill of Seven Colors, explore the village and take time for the Paseo de los Colorados.
Plan Purmamarca →Argentina Travel Online · Northern Argentina
Explore the Quebrada de Humahuaca at a pace that leaves room for its towns, culture and changing landscapes. Use this guide to connect Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahuaca and the high-altitude Salinas Grandes.
Plan your visit ↓Start with the essentials
For a first visit focused on the Quebrada, allow three to five days. A quick visit from Salta can introduce one or two places, but nights in Jujuy make it easier to enjoy the towns and plan separate high-altitude excursions. Longer trips can include the Puna or the Yungas, which have very different landscapes.
Choose your route
Walk by the Hill of Seven Colors, explore the village and take time for the Paseo de los Colorados.
Plan Purmamarca →Use this Quebrada town as a base for its cultural life, the Pucará archaeological site and nearby walks.
Plan Tilcara →Continue north through the UNESCO-listed cultural landscape and decide whether to add a separate Hornocal outing.
Explore the Quebrada →From Purmamarca, cross the Cuesta de Lipán toward a salt flat at high altitude. Check conditions and access before departing.
Plan the salt flats →The Hill of Seven Colors, the central square and the Paseo de los Colorados offer a compact introduction to the Quebrada. Purmamarca is also the usual starting point for the road to Salinas Grandes. An overnight stay lets you enjoy the village beyond a short photo stop.
The Pucará de Tilcara connects the visit with the region’s pre-Hispanic history. Tilcara also has craft, music and food experiences; allow time to explore the town itself instead of treating it only as a transfer point.
The Quebrada de Humahuaca is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. Humahuaca can anchor a longer drive north; Hornocal, if included, is an additional high-altitude excursion whose road and weather conditions should be checked locally.
The route from Purmamarca crosses the high Cuesta de Lipán. Give the round trip its own time, carry layers and water, and confirm the access rules and the day’s conditions with a local provider. Anyone concerned about altitude should discuss the journey with a qualified health professional.
Jujuy includes the Puna, Quebrada, Valles and Yungas, so a single weather rule does not cover the whole province. In the highlands, sunny days can still be followed by cold nights. Summer rain can affect mountain routes; conditions vary by location and year.
Choose the season for the route you want, check current forecasts and road reports, and allow flexibility for high-altitude journeys.
San Salvador de Jujuy and Salta both work as gateways, while Purmamarca, Tilcara and Humahuaca are in Jujuy. If your route includes both provinces, spend at least one night in the Quebrada to reduce repeated driving. Salta’s Cafayate and Cachi routes deserve their own travel days.
Budget for accommodation, meals, transport and any guided highland trips. A route with overnight stays and a local driver has different inclusions from a short shared excursion. Check current prices and services on the booking page before reserving.
