Salta Travel Guide: How Many Days, When to Go & How to Plan Your Visit

Use Salta city as a starting point for culture, the Calchaquí Valleys and mountain routes. Give the journeys their own time: the roads are part of the experience.

Plan your visit ↓

Start with the essentials

How many days do you need in Salta?

Allow three to five days for Salta city and one or two excursions. If Cafayate and Cachi are important to you, a longer stay or overnight stops will make the itinerary more comfortable. A five-day Salta and Jujuy circuit is possible, but it moves at a brisk pace.

2 daysDiscover the city and choose one nearby experience.
3–5 daysCombine the city with Cafayate, Cachi or a highland route, allowing for long travel days.
6+ daysAdd nights in the valleys or connect Salta with Jujuy without returning to the city every evening.

Ways to experience Salta

Salta city

Walk around the historic center, make time for museums and regional food, and keep an evening for the city’s music and dining scene.

Explore the city →

Cafayate

Travel through the Quebrada de las Conchas to a wine town in the Calchaquí Valleys. Consider an overnight stay for a less rushed visit.

Plan Cafayate →

Cachi & the valleys

A mountain road, cardón landscapes and a historic town make this a different side of Salta. The drive deserves unhurried time.

Plan Cachi →

Highland routes

San Antonio de los Cobres and routes toward the Puna require a full day or more. Check altitude, road conditions and the specific itinerary.

How to plan your route

Start in Salta city

Begin around the historic center and choose a museum such as the High Mountain Archaeology Museum (MAAM) or the Historical Museum of the North. The San Bernardo cable car offers a city viewpoint; a traditional peña brings folk music into the evening. A city day also gives you time to settle in before the longer drives.

Give Cafayate its own time

The road through the protected Quebrada de las Conchas is a major part of the trip, with formations such as the Amphitheatre and the Devil’s Throat. Cafayate is known for wineries and Torrontés wine. A day excursion is possible; staying overnight leaves more time for the town and vineyards. Confirm visits and tastings with each provider.

Choose Cachi for a different valley landscape

From Salta city, the journey toward Cachi passes the Cuesta del Obispo and Parque Nacional Los Cardones. Cachi has a historic village center; the wider Calchaquí Valleys connect towns such as Seclantás and Molinos. It is a separate route from Cafayate when starting in the capital, so give each route adequate time.

Treat the highlands as a distinct journey

Routes through San Antonio de los Cobres and onward to Salinas Grandes cross high-altitude areas. Compare the standard Salinas Grandes route via Purmamarca with the longer “Vuelta a las Alturas”; they are different itineraries. Ask about vehicle, route and inclusions before booking.

When is the best time to visit Salta?

Salta’s city, valleys and highlands do not share one climate. Conditions change with elevation and season, so plan clothing and daily routes for the places you will actually visit. The summer months can bring rain to mountain roads; cooler months can mean cold nights in higher areas.

For a first trip, keep some flexibility around road excursions. Check current forecasts and operating conditions, especially when traveling into the Puna.

How Salta fits with Jujuy and Tucumán

Salta city is a useful gateway, but the Quebrada de Humahuaca belongs to Jujuy. A route that includes Purmamarca and Tilcara works better when you allow a night in the Quebrada instead of treating every stop as a day trip from Salta.

A longer Northwest journey can also continue south through Cafayate toward Tucumán and the Calchaquí Valleys. Travel days matter as much as sightseeing days when connecting these places.
