Salta city
A practical arrival point and a place to slow down: historic streets, museums, markets and regional food before heading into the valleys.
Plan a Salta base →Start with the essentials
A focused Salta and Jujuy circuit can fit into five days, including Cafayate, Salinas Grandes and the Quebrada de Humahuaca. For a less hurried first trip, allow six to eight days. The region is spread out: a place that looks close on a map can take much of a day to reach when you allow time for scenery and stops.
With three or four days, choose one main area. A five-day organized circuit can link Salta, Cafayate, Salinas Grandes and the Quebrada at a brisk pace.
Combine Salta, time in the Quebrada and an overnight stay around Cafayate, with travel days built in.
Travel more slowly, add smaller towns or consider a separate high-altitude route after checking the road conditions and your comfort with altitude.
Choose your route
A practical arrival point and a place to slow down: historic streets, museums, markets and regional food before heading into the valleys.
Plan a Salta base →Purmamarca, Tilcara and Humahuaca offer very different stops along a cultural landscape shaped by mountain scenery and living traditions.
Plan time in Jujuy →The journey through the Quebrada de las Conchas is part of the experience; stay for the town, vineyards and Calchaquí Valley setting.
Plan Cafayate →Add the salt flats via Purmamarca, or a Hornocal viewpoint extension near Humahuaca. Both add travel time and altitude; choose the route that fits your days.
Plan the journey →Salta works well at the start or end of the route, especially if you are arriving by air. Give the city time instead of using it only as a departure point for long excursions.
An overnight stay in or near Purmamarca, Tilcara or Humahuaca makes the Quebrada less rushed. Pick the town that suits your route and preferred pace; the valley is more than one photo stop.
Cafayate deserves at least a night if your schedule permits. The drive from Salta through the Quebrada de las Conchas is scenic, so leaving time for stops improves the journey.
Northern Argentina spans different elevations and climates. In the Quebrada, summer is the wetter season and winter is generally drier, with cold nights. Valleys, cities and high-altitude areas can feel very different on the same trip. Pack layers and check the forecast for each stop rather than treating the Northwest as a single climate zone.
For many travelers, the shoulder seasons offer a useful balance for touring. Your best dates still depend on the places you choose, road conditions and whether you want to include festivals or high-altitude routes.
Salta is a practical starting point for this itinerary. You can combine intercity buses, organized excursions and a rental car, depending on how much flexibility you want. A car gives you control over stops, but mountain drives require realistic timing and an up-to-date check of routes and weather.
Plan the Quebrada and Cafayate as distinct legs, with an overnight stay where possible. A five-day circuit can use Salta and Purmamarca as bases; longer programs can add Cachi or San Antonio de los Cobres. If you add the Puna, Salinas Grandes or Hornocal, build in a gentler schedule and take altitude seriously. Confirm what your chosen service includes: accommodation, meals and entry fees vary by program.
Buenos Aires often works as an arrival or departure stop. If Patagonia is also on your itinerary, treat the North as a separate segment rather than assuming you can cross the country in a day without affecting your plans. Leave room for connections and changes in weather.
